Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at ODU
Your Roadmap to Hampton Roads
Sure, your focus will be on academics and your future in healthcare, but everyone needs a break now and then. And there’s no better place to get your mind off the books than Coastal Virginia.
For beach lovers – while you can find a beach almost anywhere in southeastern Virginia, one of the most popular spots is the Virginia Beach oceanfront. Its miles of white sand beaches beckon you to sunbathe, surf, swim, and stroll or bike the three-mile Boardwalk.
For mountaineers and hikers – marvel at the Blue Ridge Mountains and the natural beauty of Virginia’s numerous state parks, several of which are within 20 minutes of Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University. And when winter puts an end to warm-weather water sports, you can drive three hours to ski at Wintergreen.
For amusement park enthusiasts – Busch Gardens Williamsburg is voted “World’s Most Beautiful Theme Park” year after year and is a great destination for a fun day trip. King’s Dominion is also an easy drive.
For music fans — Venues range from nationally known amphitheaters to frequent summer festivals to cozy listening rooms, and they cater to a wide variety of tastes.
We have campus housing available. To help you find the best neighborhoods for renting in Hampton Roads, ApartmentFinder.com assembled a list of five neighborhoods suitable for various lifestyles and budgets:
Attractions, activities, nightlight, and gorgeous water. If you want a boardwalk for a backyard, this is the place for you. Did you know? Sea air encourages respiratory health and daily exposure to the sun can enhance your mood and provides plenty of Vitamin D.
Health spas, quiet parks, restaurants and shopping. Enjoy the view from the apartments at Towne Center, and meet up with friends at one of the free Summer Concert Series events. Although this destination is conveniently located just off I-64, you enjoy the peaceful, friendly community that surrounds you.
According to ApartmentFinder.com, Norfolk is the trendy spot of Hampton Roads due to its abundance of waterfront property. The apartments in the Ghent District are newer, but prepare to pay higher rent because of this. Other than price, the neighborhood is pedestrian-friendly, the views are amazing, and the dining options are some of the best in the region. It’s not surprising this neighborhood is a favorite for many residents.
Want to be in walking distance to bars, restaurants, coffee shops and parks? Downtown Norfolk is one of the best spots to live in the region. The public schools are above average, and the quality of life is outstanding. Get inspired by local theatre or rock out at the NorVa, one of the most talked about music venues in the entire state. And for the added cherry on top, you’ll live very close to campus.
“East Beach is very well located, just a 10-minute drive from Norfolk International Airport, and a 20-minute drive to downtown Norfolk, the major employment centers and military bases. The community is right on the Chesapeake Bay where the Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. In just ten minutes you can walk from the beach at the north end of the community to your boat at the deep-water marinas at the south end of the community.” (CoastalLiving.com)
“One visit to Olde Towne Portsmouth and you’ll be hooked. Amble along the famous Seawall. Stroll through three centuries of historic neighborhoods. Go antiquing. Take in some art. Eat at one of the delightful restaurants. Choose from a wide variety of fine, casual and family dining establishments with many offering outdoor seating. Many of Portsmouth’s attractions are clustered within easy walking distance of each other, making it the perfect place to spend a day.” Renting an apartment in this historic location comes with a ton of perks, affordability not being one of them.
